Welcome & Overview
Since 1988 Lincoln’s Inn has run a European Law Programme aimed at offering judges, barristers and students opportunities to learn more about the practice of European and human rights law, providing familiarity with the way that it is applied in this country and by the European Courts.
Lincoln’s Inn has attracted some of the brightest legal minds in Europe to share their experiences with us. The programme centres around four pillars:
· The annual Sir Thomas More Lecture, where senior members of the European and UK judiciary have the opportunity to offer their thoughts on contemporary topics. In 2010, The Honourable Mr Nicholas Forwood QC, British Judge of the General Court of the Court of Justice of the European Union, spoke on The European Judge in a post-Lisbon world. In 2011 The Rt Hon Lord Walker of Gestingthorpe, Bencher and past Treasurer of this Inn and Justice of the Supreme Court, will be giving the Sir Thomas More Lecture. Past speakers include The Rt Hon Lady Justice Arden, (former Advocate General) Sir Francis Jacobs, The Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC, The Rt Hon Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury MR, Advocate General Eleanor Sharpston QC, Judge Sir Konrad Schiemann and President Dr Vassilios Skouris.
· Lecture and workshop series given by specialist practitioners and officials on critical developments in European and Human Rights law, ranging from Competition Law to Immigration and Asylum Law.
· Annual visits to the international courts in Luxembourg, The Hague and Strasbourg. Participants get an understanding of the workings of these courts and their interaction with national legal systems.
· Scholarships for young barristers to work in the European Courts in Luxembourg and Strasbourg as well as the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the European Commission and European law firms in Brussels. Beneficiaries gain real-life experience that stands them in good stead when in practice.
We hope that we have attracted your interest and that you will take part in our activities. If you wish to be on our mailing list for events, or wish to get involved in the Group’s activities, please contact us at
It is very encouraging to see how much the Inn’s interest in and involvement with Europe has developed since the Law Programme began over 20 years ago. Much is due to the hard work and expertise put in by the Group, for which I am very grateful.
